What is a fused spur used for?

A fused spur provides a dedicated switched and fused connection for a fixed appliance such as a kitchen extractor, bathroom heater, or washing machine. The switch allows the appliance to be isolated without turning off the entire circuit at the consumer unit, and the internal fuse protects the appliance from overload. What back box depth is required?

What does the neon indicator do?
