Frequently Asked

Are USB sockets safe?

Yes. These sockets carry built-in overload, overheat and over-current protection on the USB circuit, and the mains outlets are fused and switched as normal. They are certified to BS 1363-2.

Do USB sockets use power when nothing is plugged in?

The charging module draws a very small standby current to remain ready, but it is negligible and the USB ports only deliver charge when a device is connected.

Does a USB socket need extra wiring?

No additional supply is needed — it wires to the same ring or radial circuit as a standard socket — but the charging module sits behind the plate, so a deeper back box is required. Installation should be carried out by a competent person in accordance with BS 7671.

What is the difference between USB-A and USB-C?

USB-A is the older flat rectangular port; USB-C is the newer smaller reversible port used by most recent phones, tablets and laptops. A socket with both charges current and legacy devices.
