Description

The Knightsbridge 10AX fan isolator switch is a triple-pole switch that isolates fan units while keeping the lighting circuit live, designed for bathrooms, utility rooms and kitchens where an extractor fan needs independent switching from the main lights. The switch carries a 10A rating at 230V and uses three poles to isolate both fan live, neutral and switched live connections in a single action.

Installed typically in en-suite bathrooms, WCs and utility rooms, the switch sits between the fan unit and the wiring circuit, allowing safe isolation for maintenance without needing to switch off the entire room's power. The rounded-edge faceplate measures 87.75mm square with a 7.5mm projection from the wall once fitted onto a 16mm minimum back box depth. The matt black finish provides a low-sheen neutral tone that suits contemporary, industrial and monochrome interiors without the reflective glare of polished finishes.

The faceplate is pressed from premium-grade steel with a built-in gasket behind the plate, providing improved dust resistance over basic plastic faceplates. The screw terminals accept standard UK wiring, and an earth terminal is provided for Class I earthed installations. The switch is certified to BS EN 60669-1 and BS EN 60669-2-4, with IP20 rating suitable for general indoor use in dry locations.

What is a triple-pole fan isolator and why is it needed?

A triple-pole fan isolator switches three separate conductors simultaneously — the fan live, neutral and switched live — allowing complete electrical isolation of the fan unit for safe maintenance while leaving the room lighting circuit live. This is a Building Regulations requirement in many bathroom installations where the fan is wired separately from the light switch.

What back box depth is required?

A minimum 16mm back box depth is needed. The 7.5mm projection of the faceplate adds to the overall depth once installed. Standard 25mm or 35mm back boxes are compatible.

Can this be used in a bathroom?

The switch carries IP20 rating, suitable for general indoor dry locations. In bathrooms it must be installed outside the defined zones (typically outside Zone 2, at least 600mm from the bath or shower enclosure edge) or in a location not subject to direct water spray. Consult Part P Building Regulations and BS 7671 wiring regulations for bathroom placement.
