Landa make outdoor lighting in cast aluminium, and they have been making the same shapes long enough that the castings have their own character. The range runs from traditional glazed lanterns to plain contemporary bollards, on wall brackets, short pedestals and columns to head height and beyond. One lantern head is offered as a wall light, a hanging wall lantern, a pendant, a bollard and a lamp post.

What Landa make

Landa's range is cast aluminium, painted, and built for permanent outdoor installation. The traditional side is glazed lanterns, four or six panes under a domed or pitched roof, on a wall bracket, a short pedestal or a column. The contemporary side is plain: cylinders and egg-forms in a single sweep of metal with a louvred or opal diffuser. Both sides share the same construction and the same finishes, so a scheme can mix them without looking mixed.

Cast aluminium, and why it matters outdoors

Cast aluminium does not rust. That is the whole argument, and it is why the material has outlasted every fashion in outdoor lighting. A cast body is thicker than a pressed or folded one, so the fitting holds its shape when someone catches it with a wheelbarrow, and the paint is baked on rather than sprayed, which is what keeps the colour against sun and salt. A scratch can be touched in rather than replaced.

Finishes

Most ranges come in black, white, grey, graphite and oxide, and several offer a copper top. That is a copper roof over a painted body, which weathers to a darker tone over a few seasons and is usually bought for exactly that. A few ranges are made in stainless steel throughout for coastal sites, where paint is the part that fails first.

Wall lanterns and half lanterns

A wall lantern stands off the wall on a bracket and throws light up, down or both. A half lantern is cut flat at the back and sits almost flush, which suits a narrow porch return or a pier where a full lantern would overhang. Both take a standard E27 bulb and most are rated IP44, which covers driving rain on an open elevation.

Bollards and lamp posts

A bollard bolts down to a pad or a paver and marks the edge of a path without dazzling anyone walking it. A lamp post does the same job for a drive, and height is what separates them: our columns run from waist height to well above head height, and several ranges adjust after the ground has been made up. Multi-head posts carry two or three lanterns on a cross-arm.

Ratings and installation

Ratings run from IP43 to IP65 depending on the fitting, and the specification on each product gives its own. A sheltered porch and an exposed drive are not the same problem. Everything here is a fixed wiring connection and a qualified electrician should handle it. Bulbs are not included unless the listing says the lamp is built in.

Does cast aluminium rust?
No. Aluminium does not rust, which is why it has been the standard material for outdoor lighting for so long. The paint can chip and a chip can be touched in, but the body underneath will not corrode.

What is the difference between a wall lantern and a half lantern?

No, unless the listing says the lamp is built in. Most of the range takes a standard E27 bulb up to 25 watts.

Can I fit these myself?
These are a fixed wiring connection rather than a plug, so a qualified electrician should make the connection. Mounting a wall fitting or bolting a bollard down is straightforward.

Do the lamp posts adjust for height?
Several ranges do, on a telescopic column, which is useful when the levels are not settled until the paving goes down. The product title states the range where a post adjusts.
