Description
The Zew Black 235J is a wall-mounted outdoor wall light that throws light both up and down the face it sits on. It takes two GU10 PAR16 lamps rated up to 35W each, drawing the beam into two opposing columns rather than a single wash, which grazes the wall surface above and below the fitting. Running on 220 to 240V AC, it is a fixed-direction façade light, the form US buyers know as an outdoor wall sconce, suited to framing a doorway or marking the line of an exterior wall after dark.
This up and down format works well either side of a front door, beside a garage entrance or along a rendered or brick façade where the twin beams pick out texture. Because the light is directional rather than ambient, it is best judged on the effect it creates rather than a floor area: the upward and downward throw reads as two soft triangles against the wall, so spacing several units evenly along a frontage gives a rhythmic, repeated pattern. Mount it at around head height or just above for entrances, lower along a boundary wall where you want the wash to stay closer to ground level.
The body is aluminium alloy in a black finish, a compact 110 by 65 by 235 mm and 980 g, so it sits close to the wall without bulk. An IP44 rating makes it splash-resistant and suited to sheltered positions such as a porch, carport or covered entrance, though it should be kept clear of fully-exposed spots facing direct driving rain. The two GU10 lamps are user-replaceable, letting you set the colour temperature and brightness to taste. This is part of the wider Zew outdoor range, which carries matching wall fittings in the same black finish.

Frequently Asked
Can this be used outdoors?
Yes, within limits. The IP44 rating means it is splash-resistant and built for sheltered outdoor spots such as a porch, carport or covered entrance. Keep it out of fully-exposed positions exposed to direct driving rain or water jets.
How does the up and down light effect work?
Each of the two GU10 lamps fires in an opposing direction, one upward and one downward, so the beams wash the wall surface above and below the fitting. This creates two soft columns of light rather than a flat single-direction spread, which is why it suits framing doorways and grazing textured façades.
Does it take replaceable bulbs?
Yes. It uses two GU10 PAR16 lamps rated up to 35W each, which are not built in and can be swapped by hand. That lets you choose the colour temperature, brightness and dimmable behaviour to suit the entrance, and replace a lamp without changing the fitting.
At what height should it be mounted?
For entrances, around head height or just above works well so the up and down throw frames the doorway. Along a boundary or garden wall, mount it lower so the wash stays nearer ground level, and space several units evenly for a repeated pattern across a frontage.
