York 1 Light Outdoor Chain Lantern - Black

The York is a single-light outdoor chain lantern with a black die-cast aluminium frame, pyramidal roof and clear textured glass panels. The lantern hangs from a matching black chain with a double-ring suspension detail, giving a 400-500mm adjustable drop from the ceiling rose to the top of the lantern body. An E27 bulb fitting inside the glass enclosure casts light through the textured panels, producing a diffused glow rather than harsh directional light.

Designed for covered outdoor areas with an IP23 rating, the York suits front porches with overhangs, covered entryways, loggia ceilings and sheltered patio areas where the fitting is protected from direct rain but exposed to moisture and temperature variation. The IP23 rating protects against light water spray at angles up to 60° from vertical, making it suitable for locations with wind-driven mist but not for fully exposed positions. The die-cast aluminium construction resists corrosion better than pressed steel alternatives.

The tapered lantern body measures 185mm square at the base and 285mm tall, giving a compact footprint that works in narrower porch ceilings without overwhelming the space. The textured glass softens the light output and hides the bulb filament or LED internals from direct view when looking at the lantern from ground level. The black powder-coated finish is matt rather than gloss, reducing reflections under daylight and pairing with both traditional brick/stone exteriors and contemporary render finishes.

What does IP23 mean for outdoor use?

IP23 protects against solid objects larger than 12.5mm and light water spray at angles up to 60° from vertical. This makes the York suitable for covered porches, loggia ceilings and sheltered patios, but not for fully exposed positions where the fitting would receive direct rain or heavy wind-driven moisture.

What bulb does it take?

The York takes a standard E27 (Edison screw) bulb up to 60W maximum. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users pair this with a warm-white LED bulb between 6-10W and 2700K for a traditional warm glow that mimics old gas lanterns.

Can the chain length be adjusted?

Yes. The chain allows adjustment between 400mm and 500mm drop during installation. Excess chain links can be removed or looped inside the ceiling rose to shorten the drop if needed for lower porch ceilings.

Is the black finish prone to fading?

The powder-coated black finish on die-cast aluminium is more UV-stable than painted pressed steel. Some gradual fading can occur over several years in very bright south-facing positions, but the matt black finish hides minor tonal variation better than gloss finishes.
