Description

The Winchester is a die-cast aluminium outdoor wall light built around a four-pane lantern housing with seeded glass and a pyramidal roof cap. The light mounts upward on a scrolled bracket, projecting approximately 250mm from the wall and standing 330mm tall. An E27 bulb inside the lantern (sold separately, max 60W) casts light through the textured glass in all four directions.

Designed for traditional and period-style exteriors, the Winchester suits porch entrances, gate posts, and positions flanking front doors where upward-facing light adds height and presence without glare at eye level. The IP44 rating protects against rain and splash, making it suitable for covered porches, front entrances under eaves, and courtyard walls with overhead shelter. The black powder-coated finish resists corrosion in typical UK coastal and urban environments.

The seeded glass texture diffuses the bulb filament while retaining some directional light throw, so the fitting works both as ambient porch lighting and as marker lighting along pathways or at garden gates. The four-pane lantern design references Victorian and Arts & Crafts outdoor lighting styles without replicating exact historical fittings. The die-cast aluminium construction gives the light a solid 1.6kg weight that feels substantial when fitted, and the metal-on-metal scroll bracket supports the lantern housing without visible joints or fixing screws once installed.

Frequently Asked

Can this be used in exposed outdoor positions?

The IP44 rating protects against rain and splash but not full weather exposure. The Winchester is best suited to covered porches, entrances under eaves, or positions with some overhead shelter. For fully exposed coastal or gable-end positions, an IP65-rated fitting would be more appropriate.

What bulb should I use?

The fitting takes a standard E27 Edison screw bulb up to 60W. Most users pair this with a warm-white LED between 6-10W and 2700K-3000K for a period-appropriate amber glow through the seeded glass. Filament-style LED bulbs suit the traditional look of the lantern housing.

Does it need to be earthed?

Yes. The Winchester is a Class I fitting and requires connection to mains earth. Installation must comply with BS 7671 wiring regulations and should be carried out by a qualified electrician, particularly for outdoor positions where water ingress is a risk.

Is the seeded glass replaceable if broken?

The four glass panes sit within the lantern frame and can be removed for replacement if damaged. Contact Elstead Lighting or Niori for replacement glass panels specific to the Winchester range.
