Description
The Winchester is a 1 light outdoor porch ceiling light with a black die-cast aluminium lantern frame, seeded glass panels on all four sides and a pitched roof canopy. The lantern housing holds a single E27 bulb (sold separately) behind glazing bars that divide each panel into four panes, casting cross-hatched shadows onto porch floors and doorsteps when lit.
Designed for covered porch ceilings, door canopies and covered entrance areas, the Winchester sits flush against the ceiling on a low-profile backplate. The IP23 rating protects against vertically falling rain and spray at angles up to 60 degrees from vertical, making it suitable for positions with solid overhead cover but not for fully exposed locations. The seeded glass diffuses the light source without fully obscuring the bulb, giving a softer glow than clear glass while retaining visibility of filament or LED detail.
The die-cast aluminium construction resists corrosion and provides structural rigidity for the glazing bars, which are welded into the frame rather than clipped. The black powder-coat finish is applied after casting and includes a UV-stable topcoat to reduce fading in sunlight. The lantern measures approximately 200mm width x 240mm height from ceiling to base of frame, making it proportionate for standard residential door canopies without dominating smaller porch spaces.
The Winchester is part of the Elstead Lighting exterior collection, which pairs traditional lantern forms with modern weatherproofing standards and contemporary LED compatibility. The E27 socket accepts standard Edison screw bulbs including warm-white LED filament styles that suit the period aesthetic, or compact LED bulbs where lower projection inside the glass housing is preferred.
Frequently Asked
What bulb does it take?
The Winchester takes a standard E27 (Edison screw) bulb. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users pair this with a 4-8W LED filament bulb at 2700K for a warm porch light that suits the traditional styling.
Can it be used in fully exposed positions?
No. The IP23 rating protects against rain falling vertically or at angles up to 60 degrees from vertical, which suits covered porches and door canopies. For fully exposed positions on exterior walls or open eaves, an IP44 or IP65 rated fitting is needed.
Is the glass clear or textured?
The glass is seeded (also called 'water glass' or 'rain glass'), which has a subtle textured surface that diffuses the light source without fully obscuring it. This gives a softer glow than clear glass while still allowing some visibility of the bulb inside.
How is it fitted to the ceiling?
The Winchester mounts to a standard ceiling rose or junction box using the backplate fixings supplied. The fitting sits flush against the ceiling with a low-profile canopy covering the wiring and fixings. Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician.
