Description

The Winchester is a 410mm-high outdoor pedestal light with a black die-cast aluminium lantern housing seeded clear glass panels behind a window-pane grid. The lantern sits on a tapered pedestal and square base, designed for mounting on gate posts, driveway pillars, low boundary walls and garden pathway plinths. An E27 bulb fitting inside the lantern casts light through the textured glass, which diffuses the beam while keeping the light source visible in the traditional lantern style.

Rated IP44 for weather resistance, the Winchester handles rain, wind and outdoor temperature variation across UK seasons. The die-cast aluminium construction resists corrosion better than pressed steel alternatives, and the black powder-coat finish is applied over a primer layer to prevent surface degradation. The 185mm-square footprint suits standard masonry pier caps and flat-topped posts between 150mm and 200mm square.

The seeded glass texture replicates the appearance of hand-blown Victorian lantern glass, giving the fitting a heritage character that pairs with both period properties and new-build homes seeking a classical outdoor aesthetic. The window-pane grid divides each face into six panes, a detail common to Arts and Crafts and early 20th-century municipal lighting. The Winchester is supplied with a base fixing template and requires four fixings into masonry or timber. What does the IP44 rating mean for outdoor use?

IP44 means the fitting is protected against solid objects larger than 1mm and splashing water from any direction. The Winchester can be installed in exposed positions subject to rain and wind, but should not be submerged or installed where water will pool inside the lantern. It is suitable for driveways, garden paths, gate posts and boundary walls.

What bulb should I use?

The Winchester takes a standard E27 bulb up to 60W, sold separately. Most users pair this with a 6-8W warm-white LED filament bulb at 2200K-2700K to recreate the glow of gas-era lanterns. Clear filament bulbs work well with the seeded glass, as the textured panels diffuse the light while keeping the filament visible.

How is it fixed to a post or pillar?

The 185mm-square base is fixed with four screws or bolts into the top of a masonry pier, brick pillar, or timber post. A fixing template is included. Cable entry is from below through the centre of the base, with a cable gland to seal against moisture ingress.

Can the glass be replaced if damaged?

Yes. The glass panels are held in place by the aluminium frame and can be removed for cleaning or replacement. Contact Elstead Lighting or Niori for replacement glass panels if needed.
