A small candle-shaped LED bulb with an E27 screw cap, left clear so the shape of the lamp stays part of what you see rather than hidden behind frosting. It draws 4W and gives 470 lumens of neutral 4000K white, a crisp tone that sits between the yellow of an old filament and the harder blue-white of a strip light. It dims, provided the circuit has a dimmer rated for LED loads.

We reach for clear candle bulbs in fittings where the lamp is on show: multi-arm chandeliers, wall lights with small shades, lantern pendants and glass-fronted fittings. The neutral white suits kitchens, utility rooms, home offices and stairwells, where a warmer light can leave the room feeling drowsy. It is also a straightforward swap for an older candle lamp on a screw cap, so a fitting you already like can be brought over to LED without altering how it looks. If you are filling several arms at once, we would buy them as one batch so the tone matches across the fitting.

The clear finish means dust shows sooner than it would on a frosted bulb, so wipe it over with a dry cloth from time to time, with the power off at the switch and the bulb cool in your hand. Nothing abrasive and nothing wet: the cap and the body want to stay dry. It carries a three year warranty. Bought singly it is a quiet replacement; bought as a set it gives a chandelier an even light with no one bulb pulling warmer or cooler than the rest. Will it dim on my existing dimmer?

It is dimmable, but it needs a dimmer designed for LED loads. Older dimmers built for filament lamps often cause flicker or a limited range, and no dimmer is supplied with the bulb.

It measures 35mm across the widest part of the candle and 95mm tall overall, including the E27 cap, so it fits neatly into small shades and narrow chandelier arms.

How bright is it and what does it replace?
