Valinha Large Earthenware Jug - Grey

The Valinha jug is earthenware, 20cm tall and holding 1500ml, with straight sides that taper in slightly from the shoulder down to a narrower foot. The lip is pinched out into a pouring spout at the front, and a wide strap handle loops from the rim back down to the body. The glaze is reactive and laid on in layers, so it runs grey and finely speckled over the whole jug and pools darker where the sides meet the base.

It holds 1.5 litres, about six glasses of water, and at 20cm it stands roughly level with a wine bottle in the middle of a table. The handle is sized for a whole hand rather than two fingers, which matters when the jug is full: it weighs 1.35kg empty. Emptied of water, the 14.5cm body takes a loose bunch of stems and holds them upright.

The jug is made from local Portuguese clay, poured by hand into moulds and finished by hand, and the reactive glaze is applied in layers, so the tone and the texture come out differently on every piece and no two are quite the same grey. How do I look after it?

Wash it after every use to prevent staining. Hand wash only, with a mild detergent, and do not leave it to soak. Handle it with care to prevent chipping.
