Description

A squat white post light with a compact, near-cube body, 16cm across and only a little taller, it sits low and spreads its light close to the ground rather than casting it about. There is an E27 socket inside, and we would fit an LED GLS A60 lamp of up to 20W, which gives soft ambient light without asking much of the fitting. No switch is built into the body, so it runs from a switch elsewhere on the circuit, and with a compatible lamp and dimmer the level can be brought down.

We keep this one for the edges of paths and driveways, low garden walls, decking and the flanks of patio steps, anywhere a tall lantern would only be in the way or in the eyeline. It is properly sealed against rain and hose washdown, so it copes with a British winter and with the odd knock from a mower or a wheelbarrow. It suits gardens where the lighting should be felt rather than looked at: a run of two or three along a route reads as guidance underfoot, while one beside a doorstep or a bench is quite enough on its own. The white body stays visible in daylight, which is useful where you want the fitting to be seen and stepped around.

The casing carries a clean white finish that sits happily against render, stone and painted timber. Keeping it right is a seasonal job: a rinse to shift grit, then a wipe over with a damp cloth once the power is off and the lamp is cold. It carries a two year warranty. The same post comes in graphite and sand brown, and the wider range takes in wall lights, up and down wall lights and ceiling lights for porches. Lamps are not included.
