Description

Universal is a ceiling light in black. A shallow black drum set tight against the ceiling, its side a plain straight band with a square-cut edge, closed underneath by a flat white diffuser recessed a little inside the rim. The diffuser glows as an even disc with no lamp showing behind it, and the black band around it holds the light in so nothing escapes sideways. The black is a fine matt with no sheen. There is no pattern on the face and no fixing visible from below. The contrast of the black rim against the white face is the whole of the design. It measures 28cm across.

Rated IP44, it is made for a bathroom, a shower room or a utility room, where steam and splashing rule out an ordinary flush fitting. That covers Zone 1 and Zone 2 under the UK wiring regulations, which is to say above a bath or a shower and within 60cm of it. Zone 0, inside the tray itself, needs a different fitting altogether. Mounted flush it clears a low ceiling and a doorway, and it lights the whole room evenly rather than pooling on one surface, which is what a room you get ready in wants.

The LED is built in at 12W, so there is no bulb to buy and none to fit. It has 3 brightness settings, changed by switching off at the wall and straight back on, so no dimmer is needed. It carries a G energy label.

Do I need to buy a bulb?

No. The LED is built into the fitting, so there is nothing to buy and nothing to fit.

What happens when the LED fails?

The fitting is replaced rather than relamped. At 12W and normal domestic use that is many years away.

How do I change the brightness?

Switch off at the wall and straight back on. Each flick moves it to the next setting. No dimmer is needed.

Will it work on a dimmer?

It does not need one, and it should not be fitted to one. Brightness is controlled from the wall switch instead.

Can it go in a bathroom?

Yes. It is rated IP44, which covers Zone 1 and Zone 2 under the UK wiring regulations: above a bath or shower and within 60cm of it. It is not for Zone 0, inside the bath or shower tray itself.
