Description

A dining table, 76cm tall, in grey. The top is what the piece is judged on, because it is the part at eye level and the part everything is put down on. A frame can be repaired; a marked top is lived with. At 180cm wide it is wider than a standard interior door. Round suits conversation and small rooms; rectangular suits numbers and a wall. That choice matters more than the finish.

A cool colour recedes: it makes a piece read as further away and a room as larger, which is why cool tones suit small spaces better than their reputation for coldness suggests. The timber here is a veneer: a thin layer of the real wood, or a printed reproduction of it, laid over a stable board core. That is why the grain runs continuously across a panel this wide, which solid timber of the same width could not do without moving. Iron is the traditional choice for a reason: it takes heat, weight and time without complaint. It will mark if it is left wet, so indoors or under cover is where it belongs. The body is MDF under the finish, which is what keeps a piece this size affordable and dimensionally stable — MDF does not move with the seasons the way solid timber does. Seats 4.
