Description
Three fish swim straight through this blue stoneware vase: their heads push out from one side and their tails flick out from the other, as though the shoal had passed right through a rock. Each head has round eyes, an open mouth and gill lines, and each tail fans out into ribbed fins. The vase stands 23cm tall and measures 23.5cm long and 13cm wide, and at 1.27KG it has a solid, reassuring weight in the hand. The body is tall and slightly narrower at the foot, with gently irregular sides and a softly uneven rim.
Its natural home is a shelf, a mantelpiece or a side table where it can be seen from the side, because the fish read best in profile. A loose handful of dried grasses, pampas or seed heads suits it well and leaves the glaze to do most of the work. It sits happily in a coastal scheme, among natural textures such as rattan and linen, or in a gathering of other ceramics on an open shelf, and it makes a cheerful gift for anyone who loves the sea, sailing or fishing. In a hallway or living room it is the piece guests notice first.
It is made entirely of stoneware. Stoneware is fired at a high temperature, which makes it dense and hard-wearing. The glaze runs in streaks and drips down the sides, deeper in the upper part and paler towards the foot, and it thins over the rim and the raised faces and fins, leaving the bare clay visible and picking out every eye and scale. Because the heads and tails stand proud of the body, the vase looks different from every angle. For the best effect, stand it side-on to the room so all three fish stay in view, and keep the stems loose and airy. The styling props shown are not included.
