Description

A set of four square napkins woven from linen and cotton in a dark moss green, 45cm on each side. Each one carries two pale cream bands, one set in from a side edge and one up from the bottom, crossing close to a corner rather than framing the napkin. The cream yarn is woven in a herringbone, so the bands read as a fine chevron against the plain green around them. All four edges are left as a short frayed fringe rather than hemmed.

A 45cm napkin folds into quarters on a side plate and opens out far enough to cover a lap. Folded once along its length it lies across a dinner plate with both bands showing. Four is enough for a small kitchen table, and a table set for six or eight takes two sets. The green is a dark olive rather than a bright one, and the two bands are the only pattern on the napkin.

Linen and cotton are woven together here, and the linen is what gives the surface its slub and its unevenness of tone. The herringbone is woven in rather than printed on top, so the bands sit level with the surface around them. The fringe is made of the threads of the napkin itself, cut and left loose on all four edges.
