Description

A broad, shallow drum in black faux silk, lined in white laminate so light is pushed back out rather than soaked up. At 35cm across it is wider than it is deep, which gives a low band of colour and a clean spill of light from the top and bottom edges. The fabric has a quiet sheen, closer to raw silk than to anything glossy. Black shades can turn a room gloomy; the pale lining keeps this one bright where it matters.

The proportions do most of the work. On a table lamp with a solid base it sits low and wide, which suits a sideboard, a broad console or the space either side of a bed where a taller shade would look pinched. Hung from a flex it behaves the same way over a dining table or a landing, spreading light downwards without dropping far into the room. We would put an LED GLS lamp inside it, and the shade is rated for up to 20W.

It is fabric throughout, faux silk outside and white laminate within, and light enough not to trouble a slim lamp base. Keep it dry: a soft brush or the upholstery tool on a vacuum lifts dust out of the weave, and any mark is better coaxed away gently than scrubbed, since damp flattens the sheen. Stand it upright if it comes off the lamp for a spell, so the drum keeps its round. It carries a one year warranty. The same cylinder runs through the range in smaller sizes and in white, grey and ivory pearl, with organza versions as well if you want something lighter in tone. Lamps are not included.
