The Serena cylinder is a low, wide shade in black faux silk, 16cm across and 11cm tall, so it reads broader than it is deep. The outer fabric carries the soft sheen of real silk, while the inside is a white laminate that keeps the light bright rather than muffling it. The straight sides and neat top and bottom edges give it a quiet, tidy outline.

Small shades of this proportion earn their keep on bedside lamps and slim table lamps, where a taller shade can look top heavy. The shallow, wide shape sends a generous pool of light downwards onto a book or a dressing table, while the dark exterior holds the glow close instead of casting it about the room. It is non-electric, so the lamp belongs to whatever it sits on, and a golf ball LED is what we would choose for it, small enough to sit well within that depth. It will go on a table lamp or on a pendant flex, and a pair either side of a bed looks deliberate. Lamps are not included.

The faux silk is bonded to a laminate backing, which is what gives the cylinder its firm shape and keeps the vertical seam flat. Keep it dry when cleaning: a soft brush or a vacuum on its lowest setting will lift dust from the weave, and a mark is best coaxed away with a cloth wrung out almost completely, never a wet one or a spray. It carries a one year warranty. What size is the fitting hole?

The shade ring hole measures 42mm, which suits standard shade carriers and pendant collars of that size.

What is the maximum wattage I can use with it?

Keep the lamp in the host fitting to 20W or less. An LED golf ball uses far less than that and is our preference here.

Can I use it on a ceiling pendant as well as a table lamp?

Yes, it is a dual mount shade, so it will hang from a pendant flex or sit on a table lamp.

Is the inside of the shade black as well?

No, the interior is a white laminate. Only the outer face is black, which is what keeps the light output bright.

How heavy is it?

It weighs around 0.14kg, so it puts very little load on a small table lamp or a lightweight flex.

Can the fabric be washed?

No. Remove dust with a microfibre cloth, lint roller or upholstery brush.
