Description

Organza in black gives this small cylinder a soft, faintly open weave, so the light glows through the sides as well as passing straight out of the shade. It measures 16cm across and 11cm tall, which makes it a wide, shallow drum rather than a tall column. Against a lit lamp the black reads as deep charcoal with a warm edge; switched off, it is simply a neat dark ring. A golf ball lamp is the one to use, and we would fit a warm white LED to keep the fabric looking gentle.

It suits bedside and small table lamps where a full sized shade would sit too heavily, and it does the same job hung as a pendant shade over a hallway, a landing or a corner chair. We often put matching shades either side of a bed, or use one to lift a plain ceramic base that deserves better company. Sheer fabric is forgiving: it softens the outline of a bare lamp without shutting the light in, which is why we like it in rooms where you want atmosphere rather than brightness.

Organza is a fine, crisp fabric that wants a light touch: lift dust with a soft brush or a hairdryer on its cool setting, and keep water, sprays and polishes well away from the weave. Colour holds well when it is out of direct sun. It carries a one year warranty, and lamps are sold separately. The same shallow cylinder is stocked in organza in cream and soft bronze if you would rather something paler, and in faux silk in black, white and grey where a denser, more opaque shade suits the room better. Mixing textures across a room works well.
