Description
The Savoy Stripe cushion is a 50 x 50cm square in charcoal grey polyester velvet, and its front is the reason to buy it. Rather than a printed pattern, the stripe is cut into the velvet pile: bands of dense, standing pile alternate with flatter channels, so the surface catches and drops the light along its length. Fine metallic threads run through the flatter channels, which is why the stripe reads as pale grey and warm gold at once depending on where you stand. The reverse is a plain, smooth velvet in the same charcoal tone.
A cushion of this size does the anchoring work on a sofa or a bed. At 50 x 50cm it is large enough to sit at the back of a two or three seater as a base layer, with smaller cushions stacked in front, and it holds its shape well enough to prop against when you are reading. The charcoal ground keeps it easy to place: it sits with deeper greys and blacks for a quiet scheme, and its gold threading gives it enough warmth to work against ochre, rust or a natural linen throw. The cut pile means it reads differently across the room than it does up close, so it earns its place on a plain seat.
The velvet is polyester throughout, front and reverse, which makes it a hard-wearing choice for a cushion that gets leaned on daily. A zip closure runs along one edge, so the cover comes off the pad for cleaning and goes back on without a fight. Brush the pile in one direction to keep the stripe reading cleanly. If you like the effect, the Savoy Stripe is made in other colourways, so you can carry the same cut-velvet texture across a room.

Frequently Asked
Is the stripe printed or woven into the fabric?
Neither. The stripe is cut into the velvet pile, so raised bands of pile alternate with flatter channels and you can feel the texture with your hand.
What is the reverse of the cushion like?
The back is a plain, smooth velvet in the same charcoal grey, with no stripe, so you can turn it over for a quieter look.
Does the cover come off for cleaning?
Yes. There is a zip along one edge, so you can take the cover off the pad and put it back on without difficulty.
How big is the cushion?
It measures 50 x 50cm, a generous square that works as a back layer on a sofa or bed with smaller cushions in front.
Why does the colour look grey and gold at the same time?
Fine metallic threads run through the flatter channels of the stripe, so the surface reads pale grey from one angle and warm gold from another as the light shifts.
