Description

The QTX RP4 is a 4-channel DMX relay pack that switches each channel fully on or fully off rather than dimming, providing hard power control for LED effects and fixtures that flicker under phase-angle dimming. Each of the four channels provides two IEC outlets, giving eight total outputs from a single DMX control line.

Designed for clubs, theatres, bar installations and event venues where LED effects need reliable switching without the noise and flicker that standard dimmers introduce to LED loads, the RP4 mounts to a wall or rack using the integral side brackets. DMX addressing is set via a 9-position DIP switch on the top panel, allowing the unit to respond to any four consecutive channels within the 512-channel DMX universe.

The metal housing measures 193 x 72 x 260mm and weighs 2.3kg, with ventilation slots on both sides to dissipate heat during extended operation. The front panel carries eight green LED indicators showing the status of each output channel, plus a red power LED. DMX input and output are via 3-pin XLR connectors on the rear, allowing the RP4 to sit mid-chain or at the end of a DMX run.

Each channel switches mains voltage at 230Vac 50Hz through a relay contact rather than a triac or thyristor, so there is no residual leakage current when the channel is off and no phase-angle distortion when the channel is on. This makes the RP4 suitable for modern LED fixtures that require clean AC switching rather than the chopped waveform that traditional dimmers produce.

Frequently Asked

What's the difference between a relay pack and a dimmer pack?

A dimmer pack reduces voltage to lower the brightness of a light. A relay pack switches the channel fully on or fully off with no intermediate levels. Relay packs are used for LED effects and fixtures that flicker or behave unpredictably under phase-angle dimming, and for switching non-dimmable loads like fog machines or strobes.

How is DMX addressing set?

The RP4 uses a 9-position DIP switch on the top panel to set the starting DMX address. The unit occupies four consecutive channels from the start address. For example, setting the start address to 001 makes the unit respond to DMX channels 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Can it be used with non-lighting equipment?

Yes. The relay switching works with any mains-powered equipment that draws within the rated load per channel. Common uses include fog machines, strobes, UV lights, motor-driven effects and projectors. Check the manual for the exact load rating per channel.

Does it need a DMX terminator?

If the RP4 is the last device on the DMX chain, a 120-ohm terminator should be fitted to the DMX output XLR to prevent signal reflections. If other DMX devices follow the RP4 in the chain, no terminator is needed at this point.
