Description

The QTX DMX Lighting Lead is a 1.5m cable with a 3-pin XLR plug on one end and a 3-pin XLR socket on the other, designed to carry DMX512 control signals between lighting controllers and fixtures. The 4mm diameter cable uses shielded construction to reduce electromagnetic interference and crosstalk, maintaining signal integrity across short cable runs.

This length works in rack-mounted control setups where a DMX controller sits directly above or below a dimmer pack or fixture controller, and in stage setups where fixtures are positioned within 1-2m of the signal source or previous fixture in a daisy chain. The 1.5m length minimises cable clutter in tight spaces like small studios, mobile DJ rigs, and compact stage setups where longer cables would create excess slack and tripping hazards.

The 3-pin XLR connectors are the standard for DMX lighting control, compatible with the majority of moving heads, LED parcans, DMX dimmers and lighting consoles on the market. The plug and socket housings are moulded plastic with metal shells that provide strain relief at the cable entry point. The cable jacket is flexible enough to route through cable trays and around corners without kinking.

Frequently Asked

What is this cable used for?

This cable carries DMX512 control signals from a lighting controller or console to DMX-compatible fixtures like moving heads, LED parcans and dimmer packs. It can also link fixtures in a daisy chain by connecting the DMX Out socket on one fixture to the DMX In socket on the next.

Can it be used for audio?

While the 3-pin XLR connectors physically match audio microphone cables, this cable is optimised for DMX data transmission rather than balanced audio. For best results, use dedicated microphone cable for audio and dedicated DMX cable for lighting control.

How many fixtures can be connected in a chain?

DMX512 protocol supports up to 32 fixtures per DMX universe in a daisy chain, though in practice the limit depends on the quality of the cable run and the input impedance of the fixtures. This 1.5m cable would typically be one section in a longer chain.

Is it suitable for outdoor use?

The cable jacket provides basic moisture resistance for indoor and covered outdoor environments. For exposed outdoor use in rain or damp conditions, consider housing the connectors under protective covers or using IP-rated DMX connectors.
