A small round golfball lamp finished in white, sized to sit neatly inside a shade where a standard pear-shaped bulb would look bulky. The screw E27 cap suits the majority of table lamps and pendants in British homes. Its light is warm white at 3000K, the soft yellow-leaning tone most people want in a living room or a bedroom, and it draws just 5W for 470 lumens. It is not dimmable, so give it a plain switch rather than a trailing dimmer. It is sold as a duo-pack, so there is a spare in the box or a match for the fitting next to it.

We reach for golfball lamps whenever a shade is shallow or a fitting has arms sitting close together, since the compact glass keeps the outline tidy and stops the lamp poking past the fabric. It works well in bedside lamps, small pendants over a hall table, multi-arm ceiling fittings and wall lights with narrow shades. The warm tone flatters wood, brick and painted plaster in older rooms, and it is a straight swap for anyone still running the last of their old golfball filament lamps and wanting the running cost down.
