40W IP20 Non-Dimmable LED Driver

This is a constant current LED driver, the small power supply that sits between the mains and an LED fitting that has no gear of its own. Its own label gives the output as 32 to 40Vdc at a fixed 1000mA, which suits an LED load rated between 32W and 40W at one amp. The mains input is 220 to 240Vac at 50/60Hz, drawing 0.20A, with a power factor of 0.95. The output is SELV, so the low voltage side is separated from the mains supply. It is rated IP20, which means it is built for dry indoor positions only.

Drivers like this one are wanted when an LED panel, a run of downlights or a bespoke fitting arrives without gear, or when the original driver has failed and the fitting itself is sound. The flat rectangular case has a moulded mounting foot at each end with screw holes, so it can be fixed to a joist, a void batten or the back of a luminaire housing rather than left loose on a cable. The terminals take conductors of 0.75 to 1.5mm². Ambient operating temperature is given on the label as minus 20 to plus 45 degrees, with a maximum case temperature of 80 degrees, so give it air rather than burying it in loft insulation.

Before ordering, check three figures against the fitting you are driving: its forward voltage must fall inside 32 to 40Vdc, its drive current must be 1000mA, and its load must not go above 40W. A constant current driver is matched on current first, not on wattage alone. This driver is not dimmable, so wire it to an ordinary switch; a mains dimmer on the input will not dim the light and may damage the unit. Wiring is work for a qualified electrician. Can I use it with a dimmer switch?

No. It is non dimmable, so it should be fed from an ordinary switched circuit. A mains dimmer on the input will not dim the light and may damage the driver.

Can one driver run more than one fitting?

Only where the fittings are wired in series, each is rated at 1000mA, and their combined forward voltage stays inside the 32 to 40Vdc output window.

Where should it be mounted?

It screws down through the holes in the moulded feet at either end, so it can sit on a joist, a batten or inside a luminaire housing where air can move around it.
