Description

Our Pomp mobile takes the shape of a hot air balloon: a striped green fabric balloon with a small woven basket hanging beneath it on cords. It measures 25cm across and 65cm tall, a generous size for a mobile, so it holds its own in a room with a high or sloping ceiling rather than getting lost. It is made from polyester, water hyacinth, iron, acacia and jute, a mix of fabric, natural plant fibres, wood and metal, and it weighs only 0.24KG, so it is light to hang and easy to move whenever the room changes.

We think it is happiest in a nursery or a child's bedroom, hung near a window or in the corner of a room where it catches the eye from the bed or the play rug. The little basket has room for a small soft toy, so a favourite bear or bunny can take a ride, and swapping the passenger now and then keeps the scene fresh for a child who loves stories. It works just as well in a playroom or a reading nook, and because it is a decoration rather than a light, it needs no plug, no battery and no wiring.

The balloon is built from fabric panels, with the stripes running from top to bottom and a striped band finishing the top and the base, and a metal loop at the crown takes a ceiling hook or a length of cord. Below the balloon, the basket hangs on twisted cords gathered into a knot, a neat detail that makes the whole piece look like the real thing in miniature. For styling, the green stripes sit happily beside natural wood, rattan and soft textiles, and two mobiles hung at slightly different heights look like balloons drifting past the window; the styling props shown are not included.
