Description

This is a hanging mobile in the shape of a hot air balloon, and it is a generous size for a child's room: 85cm tall and 35cm across at the widest part of the balloon. The balloon is made of polyester in soft ribbed panels, covered all over with a dense pattern of small flowers and trailing stems on a yellow ground. Beneath it, a turned finial gathers the cords that carry a little woven basket, so the whole piece reads at once as a balloon in flight. Its materials are polyester, water hyacinth, iron, acacia and jute.

Its natural home is a nursery or a child's bedroom, hung where it can be seen from the bed or the rug. The yellow is soft rather than loud, so it sits easily with pale walls, natural wood and woven furniture, and the floral pattern gives a nursery a gentle point of interest. It also looks well in a window bay, where daylight picks out the shape of each panel. The balloon is built from separate panels joined at fine seams, with a narrow band at the crown and another at the base, and a wire loop at the top takes the hanging.
