Description

A set of four napkins, each 45cm square, in a blend of linen and cotton. The ground is an undyed cream and the print is a small repeating motif in terracotta, stamped across the whole face, with a band of fine terracotta stripes running along one edge. The edges are hemmed, and the four together weigh 0.17kg.

At 45cm square each napkin opens across a lap and folds into a quarter that sits on a side plate. Four is a table of four with nothing spare. The motif is small at this scale, so from across a table it reads as a texture rather than as a pattern.

The fabric is 55% linen and 45% cotton, and the print is put on by hand with carved wooden blocks: the motif is cut into the block, the block is dipped in dye, and it is pressed onto the fabric one stamp at a time. Because every press is placed by hand, the spacing and the depth of the dye vary across a napkin and from one napkin to the next. They are food safe.
