Description
This is a stoneware bowl 16cm across and 5cm tall that holds 525ml, finished in a reactive glaze that gives it its character. Here the yellow pools, thins and runs into a darker, textured section that sweeps across the bowl in a curve, inside and out. Where the two meet there is a soft, cloudy band, and in the base the glaze gathers into a deeper ring. It is a low, open shape, wider than it is tall, and at 0.49KG it sits steadily on the table without feeling heavy in the hand.
At 525ml it makes a generous breakfast bowl for cereal, porridge or yoghurt with fruit, and a good size for soup, a side salad or a pudding after supper. The wide, shallow form keeps everything within easy reach of a spoon. Because it can go in the oven, it suits a baked crumble or a small gratin for one, carried straight to the table. It is as happy on an everyday kitchen counter as on a table laid for friends, and we think a few of them, side by side, make a cheerful spread for a weekend brunch.
Stoneware is fired at a high temperature, which leaves it dense and hard-wearing for daily use. This bowl goes in the dishwasher after a meal, in the microwave to warm leftovers and in the oven, so it earns its place in a busy kitchen. Reactive glazes move in the kiln, so no two pieces fire quite alike, which keeps each bowl a little individual. For styling, set it on a pale stone or wooden board, where the yellow glaze looks its warmest, or pair it with lemons and loose linen on a summer table. The styling props shown are not included.
