Description

This is a rounded stoneware milk jug that holds 435ml, with a full, bellied body, a pinched pouring lip and a generous loop handle. It stands 10cm tall and measures 10.5cm across, so it is a proper milk jug rather than a tiny creamer, yet small enough to sit beside the teapot without crowding the tray. The upper body is glazed a soft pink, and towards the base the glaze breaks into a speckled, textured band before giving way to a bare stoneware foot. It is made of 100% stoneware and weighs 0.31KG, so it sits lightly in the hand.

On the breakfast table it holds the milk for tea or coffee, and at the weekend it does just as well with cream for a crumble, custard or gravy for the Sunday roast. Because it can go in the microwave, you can warm milk for a latte or hot chocolate in the jug itself and pour straight from it. It suits a kitchen with open shelving, a dresser or a country-style dining room, and it makes a thoughtful gift for anyone who takes their tea seriously. Away from the table, it also makes a small vase for a few garden stems.

The finish is a reactive glaze. Reactive glazes move and pool as they fire, so the way the pink meets the speckled band varies a little from one jug to the next, and yours will have its own character. The jug goes in the dishwasher, the microwave and the oven, so there is no special care to remember. Stoneware is dense and hard-wearing, and it holds warmth well, which is useful for hot custard or gravy. When it is not in use, set it on an open shelf among other glazed stoneware, or stand it beside a plain white teapot, where the pink and the speckled band show at their best.
