Description

This is a blister pack of two Panasonic Alkaline Power D cells, the largest of the common cylindrical battery sizes and the one an appliance label usually calls LR20. Each cell gives a nominal 1.5 volts, exactly the same as an AA or an AAA, so what you are buying is not more voltage but far more capacity. That is the whole point of a D: it holds enough energy to keep something running for a long stretch, or to feed a heavy current, without the cells needing swapping every other week.

D cells are what large torches, camping lanterns, portable radios, wall clocks in cold halls and battery door chimes tend to take, along with a fair number of children's ride-on toys and garden lanterns. They are the fat, stubby cells, clearly wider and taller than a C, so there is no fitting one in the other's place. If you are replacing an existing set, lift one out and check the marking on it or inside the compartment: LR20 or R20 both name this size, and an alkaline LR20 will go straight into anything that was running on the cheaper zinc carbon version.

Two cells come on one blister card. Alkaline cells of this type are single use; they are not designed to be recharged, and spent ones belong at a battery recycling point rather than in household waste. We sell the pack in multiples of twelve, which is sensible if you look after a village hall, a workshop or a holiday let and would rather not run out mid-winter. How many cells do I actually receive?

Is a D cell the same thing as an LR20?

Yes. LR20 is the code for an alkaline cell in the D size, and R20 is the older zinc carbon version of the same physical size, so either marking on your device points here.

Can I recharge these once they are flat?

No. Alkaline cells of this type are single use and are not built to take a charge, so please fit fresh ones and take the spent cells to a battery recycling point.

What voltage will my device see?

Each cell is 1.5 volts nominal. Two fitted end to end in series give three volts, which is what most two cell torches and radios are designed around.

Will a D fit a torch that asks for C cells?

No, a D is both wider and taller than a C and will not go into the compartment. Check the moulded marking inside the battery housing before ordering.
