Description

These are Panasonic C cells in zinc carbon chemistry, supplied two to a blister card. Each one gives the 1.5V that every C size cell gives, and carries the IEC code R14, which is the code that separates a zinc carbon C from the alkaline LR14. Zinc carbon is the original everyday battery chemistry. It stores less total energy than alkaline and releases it best in a slow, steady trickle rather than in sharp bursts, which is why the pack marks these as being for low power products.

C cells live in the equipment nobody thinks about until it stops: wall and mantel clocks, doorbell chimes, portable radios, older remote handsets, gas hob and boiler ignition units, and the odd piece of shed or garage kit. Each of those draws a small current for months at a time, and that is where zinc carbon earns its keep on price. Where a device pulls hard, as a motorised toy, a bright torch or a camera flash does, a cell of this chemistry runs down quickly and an alkaline is the better buy.
