Description

A round storage basket hand woven from water hyacinth and corn husk, 30cm across and 40cm tall to the top of the handles. The weave is a thick braided coil worked in rows, mid-brown over the upper part of the body and pale straw over the lower third, with the join running straight round. Two plaited handles rise from the rim, and each one carries on down the outside of the basket as a flat strap to the base.

The basket stands open, with no lid, and at 30cm across it takes folded throws, logs beside a fireplace, toys, or a plant pot dropped inside it. About 10cm of the 40cm height is handle, which leaves the body itself around 30cm deep. The handles are plaited flat rather than round, and each runs on down the outside to the base rather than stopping at the rim.

Water hyacinth is an aquatic plant that grows in abundance and has to be cut back to curb it, which is what makes it available as a raw material. Corn husk is the outer layer of the corn cob, which would otherwise be thrown away; it was traditionally worked into the outside of a basket to close the weave up and keep the contents fresh, and it is used for its colour now. The two together give the basket its two tones, and it is made in a larger size as well.
