Description

The Netra is a rattan storage basket, 36cm tall, 50cm wide and 32cm deep. The rods run in rough horizontal courses with others crossing them at angles, packed close enough that only small irregular gaps show through, so no two faces carry the same pattern. The rim is finished with a thick plaited band, and at each end a single rod is bent into a loop handle with its ends buried back into the sides. The body tapers slightly inward to a flat base.

At 50cm across this is a floor basket rather than a shelf one. It holds logs beside a hearth, boots and folded umbrellas inside a front door, or throws at the end of a sofa. Both handles stand proud of the rim, so it can be lifted full rather than pushed from room to room.

The basket is rattan throughout, woven by hand in Indonesia and then given a wax finish that guards it against moisture. Tone varies from rod to rod, so a single basket runs from pale straw through to a warmer golden brown, and the plaited rim sits darker than the sides where the rods double over. The rattan is cultivated rather than taken from wild stands; in parts of Indonesia it has become valuable enough that logging was stopped to let it grow.
