Description
Our pumpkin ornament is covered in overlapping natural leaves, laid row upon row from the stem downwards so that each one sits a little over the next. The result is a round, plump pumpkin in warm orange with real depth of tone, as every leaf shows its own fine veins. Lengths of twisting vine run from the top towards the base like the ribs of a pumpkin, and a few curled tendrils spring loose at the sides. At the top sits a bundle of twigs for a stem, finished with a small cluster of red and orange berries and tiny pine cones. It measures 16cm by 22cm, a good size to be noticed without crowding a shelf.
As a purely decorative piece, it belongs wherever you would like a warm note of colour: the middle of a dining table, a sideboard, a hall console, a mantelpiece or a deep windowsill. Its round base lets it sit steadily on any flat surface, so it needs no stand, hook or nail. It looks at home on a farmhouse dresser, on a coffee table beside a stack of books, or grouped with a woven basket in a cosy living room. Because the leaves give it texture as well as colour, it holds its own beside plain stoneware and natural wood.
The leaves, vine and twig stem give it a natural, layered finish, so it rewards gentle handling. Lift it from the base rather than by the stem or berries, and keep it in a dry spot. To keep it looking fresh, dust it lightly with a soft dry brush or cloth rather than wiping it with anything damp. For a fuller display, set it on a wooden board with a few apples or a sprig of dried grasses, or let it stand alone on a plain table runner, where its orange leaves and berry-topped stem need nothing more.
