Description

Our Moris wall shelf is a three-tier book rack in red paulownia, made to hold picture books face-out so the covers do the choosing. It measures 38cm long, 12cm wide and 70cm tall. The two side panels rise past the top tier and finish in rounded tops, which gives it a soft outline on the wall, and each tier is a pocket with a solid front panel that keeps books standing upright. Paulownia is a notably light timber, and at 1.6KG the whole shelf is easy to lift into place.

It is a kids' bookcase at heart, and it belongs in a nursery, a child's bedroom or a playroom, where a wall of covers turns bedtime reading into a choice a child can make. The pockets are shallow, 12cm from front to back, so it suits slim picture books, board books and magazines rather than thick novels. It takes up no floor space at all, which helps in a small room where a standing bookcase would crowd things. Hung low, it lets small readers see and reach their own books; hung higher, it becomes a display for favourite covers. It also makes a tidy home for comics and colouring books beside a reading chair.

The shelf is made entirely of paulownia. Paulownia's grain varies from board to board, and here it shows through the red, so no two shelves read quite alike. There are two holes in the back of the top tier for fixing it to the wall, and the maker's assembly instructions come as a PDF download. Care is simple: wipe it clean with a moist cloth, and that is all the tiers need. For styling, change the front row of covers with the seasons or the week's favourites, and leave a little clear wall either side so the rounded tops have room to show.
