Description

This is a set of two lidded laundry baskets made of braided water hyacinth and iron, in two sizes that stand happily together. The smaller basket is 40cm long, 30cm wide and 45cm tall; the larger is 44cm long, 34cm wide and 50cm tall. Both taper gently towards the base, which keeps them from looking boxy, and each has a hinged lid and a rectangular cut-out hand-hold near the top of its narrow side. The colour is natural, the shade of the woven fibre itself, so they sit comfortably in almost any room.

Two sizes make the pair useful in a busy home. Keep the larger in the bedroom or bathroom for everyday washing and the smaller beside it for delicates, or give each child a basket of their own in a shared room. The lids keep the contents out of sight, which matters in a guest room, a landing or a hallway where a basket stands on show. Away from laundry, they hold spare blankets, cushions, towels, toys or knitting, and the cut-out hand-holds let you carry a full basket to the washing machine without hugging it.

Water hyacinth is a plant fibre, and its strands vary a little in tone, so the braided rows on each basket carry a gentle, irregular streak that gives the weave real depth.
