Description

Smoke-tinted polycarbonate forms the globe here, set against a dark grey housing that stays quiet against a wall by day. A PIR sensor is built in, so the light comes on as someone approaches and drops out again on its own, with no need to reach for a switch. It takes an E27 lamp of up to 20W, and a dimmable lamp will respond to a dimmer if one is on the circuit. Overall it is a compact fitting, around 20cm wide, the globe sitting proud of the wall.

We reach for one of these at back doors, side passages and the run between a garage and the house, where the point is light on arrival rather than light all evening. It suits anyone coming home after dark with both hands full, and it earns its keep by a bin store or a shed door as well. Sealed against dust and splashing rain, it is happy on an open porch or a garden wall. We would put a warm white LED in it, given how often the sensor will be switching it.

Body and globe are moulded polycarbonate, chosen for outside because it shrugs off knocks and resists corrosion in damp, salty air. To keep it looking right, wipe the globe with a cloth wrung out in warm soapy water once the lamp has gone cold; cobwebs and grit dull the tint far quicker than the weather does. It carries a two year warranty. If a round shade is not the shape you are after, the range also runs to a tubular version, and both shapes are offered in a dark brown finish. Lamps are not included.
