Description

A clear polycarbonate globe sits in a dark brown housing, with a PIR sensor set beneath it so the light wakes as someone comes up the path and drops away again once things have gone quiet. It takes an E27 lamp, and at 20cm wide it reads as a neat, workaday fitting rather than a large one, with a short projection that keeps it out of the way of a door swing. There is no switch on the body; the sensor does the deciding, which is the whole point of it.

We would fit this at a back door, a side passage, a garage entrance or anywhere the walk from car to porch is done with hands full. The globe throws light out and down rather than in one direction only, so it lifts the whole doorway instead of picking out a single spot. It suits homes where the outside lighting needs to look after itself, and it works just as well on a garden wall by a gate. Fit a dimmable lamp and a suitable dimmer and the output can be brought down, though most people leave a sensor light running at full.

The construction is polycarbonate throughout and corrosion resistant, so salt air and driving rain are no trouble for it, and the dark brown finish sits quietly against brick and render alike. For cleaning, wait for a dry day, wipe the globe with a damp cloth and a little washing up liquid to shift road film and cobwebs, then dry it off; avoid solvents, which will cloud the plastic.
