Description

Metropole is a floor lamp in black. A slim black post rising from a flat round black disc base, carrying two wide shallow black domes clamped at different heights on short arms, each tipped so its mouth faces down and out. The domes are smooth curves, much broader than they are deep, with pale linings that show as bright discs from below. Each head swings and tilts on its knuckle and slides up and down the post. Fine black flexes loop over the shades and drop beside the post on show. Everything but the linings is matt black.

It stands beside a chair or at the end of a sofa, where it puts one pool of light exactly where it is needed without lighting the whole space. That is what a floor lamp is for: it takes the reading light off the ceiling and puts it at shoulder height, so the room can be lit softly and still be worked in. There is an inline switch on the coiled flex, so it is reached at the fitting rather than by following the flex down.

The holder is E27 and takes up to 40W each. It plugs into an ordinary socket, so it needs no electrician. It is class II, double insulated, so it needs no earth, and it is rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms.

Which bulb does it take?

An E27 lamp up to 40W. Bulbs are supplied separately so you can choose the brightness and colour you want.

Can it be dimmed?

Yes, on a compatible dimmer, provided the lamp you fit is a dimmable one. The fitting has no dimmer of its own.

Does it need an electrician?

No. It comes on a flex with a moulded plug and goes into an ordinary socket.

Where is the switch?

There is inline switch on the coiled flex.

Does it need an earth?

No. It is class II, double insulated, so it is wired live and neutral only.

Can it go in a bathroom?

No. It is IP20, which covers dry interior rooms only. A bathroom needs IP44 or better.
