Description

The Knightsbridge M9RCD is a metal clad 13A 2-gang DP switched socket with integrated 30mA Type A RCD protection, designed for environments where residual current protection is needed at the outlet level rather than at the consumer unit. The Type A RCD responds to both AC residual current and pulsating DC up to 6mA, making it suitable for IT equipment, servers, and other electronics with switching power supplies that can leak pulsating DC to earth.

Built for workshops, garages, industrial settings and outdoor installations under cover, the metal clad construction uses premium-grade steel with a powder-coated silver-grey finish and thermoset resin components. The enclosure carries an IP20 rating, meaning it's designed for dry indoor use or sheltered outdoor locations where direct water ingress is not a concern. The dual earth terminals and captive screw terminals ensure secure wiring during installation and reduce the risk of loosening over time.

The passive (latching) RCD design automatically resets after a power outage without manual intervention, preventing nuisance lockouts in unattended installations. The outboard rockers allow both sockets to be switched independently. The unit measures 142mm wide by 81mm high with a 50mm projection from the mounting surface, and mounts directly to a wall or surface box using the four fixing points on the rear steel plate. The 30mA tripping current with 40ms trip time meets BS EN 61008 requirements for personal protection.

Frequently Asked

What's the difference between Type A and Type AC RCD?

Type AC RCDs only detect AC residual currents. Type A RCDs detect both AC and pulsating DC residual currents up to 6mA, which makes them necessary for equipment with switching power supplies such as IT equipment, EV chargers, and variable-speed motor drives. The M9RCD is Type A.

Does the RCD reset automatically after a power cut?

Yes. This is a passive (latching) RCD, meaning it automatically resets when mains power returns after an outage. You do not need to manually press a reset button, which makes it suitable for unattended installations like server rooms or remote equipment.

Can this be used outdoors?

The IP20 rating means the socket is suitable for dry indoor use or sheltered outdoor locations where it will not be exposed to direct rain, splashing or dust ingress. For fully exposed outdoor installations, an IP66-rated enclosure would be more appropriate.

What's the trip time and sensitivity?

The RCD trips at 30mA residual current within 40ms, meeting personal protection requirements under BS EN 61008. This is fast enough to prevent dangerous shock in the event of earth leakage but slow enough to avoid nuisance tripping from normal equipment startup currents.
