Description

The Mercury RG59B/U is a 75-ohm shotgun cable combining an RG59 coaxial cable with an integrated 2-core power cable in a single jacket. The coaxial section uses a solid oxygen-free copper conductor at 0.8mm diameter, surrounded by a 3.7mm foam-filled polyethylene dielectric and a copper-clad aluminium braid. The power cable runs parallel inside the same sheath, using two stranded copper conductors at 0.79mm² each, rated to 6A.

Designed for CCTV installations where analogue or HD-TVI cameras need both video signal and power from a central location, the shotgun configuration eliminates the need to run separate coaxial and power cables. The 100m reel includes metric cut markers printed on the jacket, allowing installers to measure cable runs during installation without additional tools. The black PVC outer jacket has a 6mm diameter and suits both internal trunking and external conduit runs.

The foam PE dielectric reduces signal attenuation compared to solid polyethylene, keeping loss to 7.3dB per 100m at 100MHz and 24.7dB at 1000MHz. The 75-ohm impedance matches standard CCTV video transmission equipment, while the 67pF/m capacitance and 83% velocity factor maintain signal integrity over typical domestic and light commercial cable runs of 50-100m. The CCA braid provides screening against interference without the weight and cost of full copper braid, making the 100m reel manageable at 6.4kg.

Frequently Asked

What's the difference between shotgun cable and running separate coaxial and power cables?

Shotgun cable combines both in a single jacket, reducing installation time and the number of cable runs needed through walls, ceilings or trunking. The trade-off is less flexibility in routing — you cannot split the coaxial and power paths if they need to go different ways.

What current can the power cable carry?

The 2-core power section is rated to 6A maximum. This is sufficient for most analogue and HD-TVI cameras, which typically draw 200-500mA per camera. Multiple cameras can share the same power cable run if the combined current stays below 6A.

Is this suitable for outdoor use?

The black PVC jacket suits both internal and external runs when installed inside conduit or trunking. It is not rated for direct burial or permanent exposure to UV without protection.

What type of cameras is this cable designed for?

RG59 shotgun cable is designed for analogue CCTV cameras and HD-TVI (high-definition transport video interface) cameras. It is not suitable for IP cameras, which use Cat5e/Cat6 data cable and Power over Ethernet.
