Description

The Mercury Cat6 U/UTP is a 305m reel of unshielded twisted-pair network cable with a low smoke zero halogen (LSZH) sheath in lilac. Eight solid oxygen-free copper conductors are twisted into four pairs and insulated with HDPE, giving 5.8mm overall cable diameter and a rated performance of 250MHz across 100m runs.

Designed for Gigabit Ethernet installations in commercial and residential buildings, the cable meets TIA/EIA-568 Cat6 standards and passes Cat6 fluke testing at 100m. The LSZH sheath material complies with RoHS and reduces toxic fumes and smoke production in fire conditions, making it suitable for enclosed spaces like ducts, risers and ceiling voids where PVC cable might be restricted. The cable is HDBaseT compliant, supporting transmission of uncompressed HD video, audio, power and control signals over a single Cat6 run.

Supplied in a dispensing box with metre markings printed on the sheath at 1m intervals, the reel allows cable to be pulled cleanly without kinking or tangling during installation. The solid copper conductors provide better structural integrity for permanent installations compared to stranded alternatives, while the lilac sheath colour aids visual identification in multi-cable environments. The 305m length covers typical floor or building runs without requiring mid-span joins.

Frequently Asked

What is the difference between U/UTP and F/UTP cable?

U/UTP is unshielded — the four twisted pairs have no foil or braid screen around them. F/UTP has an overall foil shield around all four pairs. Unshielded cable is lighter, more flexible, and acceptable for most residential and commercial Gigabit Ethernet installations where EMI is not a concern.

Can this cable be used outdoors?

The LSZH sheath is designed for indoor use in ducts, risers and ceiling voids. For outdoor runs the cable should be installed inside conduit or trunking to protect it from UV exposure and moisture. External-grade Cat6 with a UV-resistant PE sheath is recommended for direct burial or exposed external mounting.

What connectors are needed to terminate this cable?

Solid-core Cat6 cable terminates into RJ45 keystone jacks, patch panels, or surface-mount boxes using punch-down tools (110 or Krone style). Do not use crimp-on RJ45 plugs designed for stranded cable — they do not grip solid conductors reliably.

Does the cable support Power over Ethernet (PoE)?

Yes. The solid copper conductors and DC resistance of less than 9.5 ohms per 100m support IEEE 802.3af (PoE), 802.3at (PoE+) and 802.3bt (PoE++) standards, allowing the cable to carry power and data simultaneously to devices like IP cameras, access points and VoIP phones.
