Description

The Mercury 8 core alarm cable is a 100m reel of stranded tinned copper clad aluminium (TCCA) conductor cable designed for security system installation and low voltage applications. Each of the eight cores carries a 0.22mm² cross-sectional area across 7 strands of 0.2mm diameter wire, colour-coded to simplify identification during wiring. The cable is sheathed in white PVC with an overall diameter of 4.6mm.

Designed for use in burglar alarm systems, fire alarm control panels, access control wiring, CCTV power distribution and general low voltage control circuits, the cable suits both residential and commercial security installation. The stranded conductor construction provides flexibility for routing through wall cavities, conduit and surface trunking without the brittleness of solid core cable. The TCCA conductor offers corrosion resistance and long-term reliability at a lower weight and cost than pure copper.

The 100m reel length suits full-house security installations or multi-room commercial systems without the need for mid-run joints. At 2kg total reel weight the cable remains easy to handle on-site. The white sheath integrates with standard white trunking and conduit systems and can be surface-clipped where concealment is not required. Each core's colour-coded insulation follows standard wiring conventions, reducing installation errors and simplifying future maintenance or expansion.

Frequently Asked

What does TCCA conductor mean?

TCCA stands for tinned copper clad aluminium. The conductor is aluminium wire clad with a layer of copper, then tinned for corrosion resistance. This construction offers better conductivity than plain aluminium while remaining lighter and more cost-effective than pure copper, making it suitable for low voltage alarm and control circuits.

Is this cable suitable for outdoor use?

The white PVC sheath provides basic weather resistance, but for permanent outdoor installation the cable should be run inside conduit or trunking to protect it from UV degradation and moisture ingress. For direct burial or exposed outdoor runs, use a cable with an outdoor-rated or armoured sheath.

How many cores do I need for a typical burglar alarm?

A basic alarm control panel to PIR sensor run typically uses 4 cores (power positive, power negative, alarm positive, alarm negative). An 8 core cable allows for two independent sensor circuits on a single cable run, or a single sensor with additional cores for tamper loops, EOL resistors and future expansion.

Can this be used for 12V DC power distribution?

Yes. The 0.22mm² CSA is suitable for low-current 12V DC runs typical of CCTV camera power, access control door strikes and LED strip power feeds over short to medium distances. For longer runs or higher current devices, calculate voltage drop to ensure sufficient power delivery at the load end.
