Description

The Mercury 4 core alarm cable is a 100m reel of white-sheathed cable designed for security alarm systems, access control wiring and low voltage signalling installations. Each of the four cores uses seven strands of 0.2mm diameter tinned copper-clad aluminium (TCCA) conductor, giving a total cross-sectional area of 0.22mm² per core. The cores are colour-coded for quick identification during termination.

Used for wiring door contacts, PIR sensors, keypads and control panels in residential and light commercial alarm installations, the cable's 3.5mm overall diameter allows it to be run through conduit, trunking or clipped along skirting without occupying excessive space. The white PVC outer sheath provides abrasion resistance and blends with most interior finishes. The 100m reel length suits typical domestic alarm wiring runs where zones cover several rooms or floors.

TCCA conductors offer lighter weight and lower cost than pure copper while maintaining acceptable conductivity for alarm circuit voltages of 12V-24V DC. The stranded construction (7 strands per core) gives greater flexibility than solid-core cable, making termination into screw terminals and connection blocks easier and reducing the risk of conductor breakage during installation. The 1.4kg reel weight is manageable for one-person installations without additional handling equipment.

Frequently Asked

What's the difference between TCCA and pure copper conductors?

TCCA (tinned copper-clad aluminium) has an aluminium core with a thin copper coating. It's lighter and cheaper than pure copper cable while providing sufficient conductivity for low voltage alarm circuits running at 12V-24V DC. Pure copper offers higher conductivity and is preferred for longer runs or higher current applications, but for typical domestic alarm installations TCCA performs reliably.

What alarm components can this cable connect?

The 4 core configuration suits door contacts, PIR motion sensors, magnetic reed switches, keypads, sounders and connections between alarm panels and zones. Each core can carry power, signal or earth connections depending on the device requirements.

Can the cable be used outdoors?

The white PVC sheath is designed for internal use. For outdoor alarm wiring between buildings or to external sensors, use a cable rated for external or direct burial installation, or run this cable inside weatherproof conduit or trunking.

How is the cable terminated?

The stranded cores terminate into screw terminals on alarm panels, junction boxes and sensor connection blocks. Strip 6-8mm of insulation from each core, twist the strands together to prevent fraying, and insert into the terminal. The colour-coded insulation (typically red, black, yellow, green or similar) makes it easier to maintain consistent polarity across multiple zones.
