Description

The Mercury 2 x 80 is a transparent-sheathed speaker cable with two cores of stranded copper and copper-clad aluminium (CCA) conductors, supplied on a 100m reel. Each core contains 20 copper strands and 60 CCA strands at 0.12mm diameter, giving a combined cross-sectional area of 0.94mm² per core and a maximum current rating of 6A. The clear sheath shows the conductors inside, with one core marked red for polarity identification during installation.

Designed for permanent speaker installation in commercial audio systems, distributed 100V line systems, home cinema runs and whole-house audio, the cable offers flexibility for routing through wall cavities, ceiling voids and conduit. The 100m reel length suits runs of up to 50m per speaker pair with minimal waste, or shorter runs across multiple zones from a single reel. The 4.2 x 8.2mm profile fits standard cable clips and trunking.

The copper/CCA blend balances conductivity with weight and cost for long cable runs where pure copper would be prohibitively heavy or expensive. CCA provides 61% of the conductivity of pure copper at significantly lower cost and weight per metre, making it viable for domestic and light commercial installations where signal loss over typical run lengths remains within acceptable limits. The transparent sheath allows visual inspection of conductor integrity without stripping the cable.

Frequently Asked

What's the maximum run length for this cable?

For passive speaker systems at 8 ohms, runs up to 15m per speaker maintain acceptable signal loss. For 100V line distributed systems, runs of 30-50m are typical. Longer runs may require a higher CSA cable to avoid audible signal degradation.

What does the red polarity marking indicate?

One core is marked red along its length to identify positive polarity. This ensures consistent phasing across multiple speakers — all red cores connect to positive terminals, all unmarked cores to negative. Reversed polarity between speakers causes phase cancellation and weak bass response.

Is CCA suitable for all speaker installations?

Copper-clad aluminium provides 61% of pure copper's conductivity, making it suitable for domestic installations, background music systems and light commercial applications where run lengths are moderate. Critical listening environments, high-power PA systems and very long runs benefit from pure copper cable with higher CSA.

Can the cable be used outdoors?

The transparent PVC sheath is not UV-stabilised or weatherproof. For outdoor speaker runs, route the cable through conduit or UV-resistant trunking, or use a cable rated for direct outdoor burial.
