Description

The Mercury is a 2-core screened audio cable with an overall lap screen beneath a 4mm diameter black PVC sheath, supplied on a 100m reel. Each core comprises 7 strands of 0.1mm diameter copper wire giving a 0.05mm² cross-sectional area per core, with a 50-strand screen of 0.1mm wire wrapped around both cores before the outer sheath is applied.

Designed for line-level audio signal runs in PA systems, studio patch bays, home cinema installations and commercial AV setups, the cable provides screening against RF and electromagnetic interference that can introduce hum or noise into unbalanced audio signals. The 4mm diameter strikes a balance between flexibility for routing through conduit or around obstacles and robustness for repeated handling during installation. The 100m reel length suits large installations where multiple runs need to be cut from a single spool.

The black PVC sheath resists abrasion and moisture ingress during installation and operational use. The cable remains flexible at room temperature, allowing it to be bent around corners and threaded through back boxes without kinking or splitting the outer jacket. The lap screen construction wraps the screening conductor around the cores rather than braiding it, providing continuous coverage along the cable run while keeping the overall diameter compact. Supplied by AVSL under the Mercury range, the cable is packed eight reels per carton for bulk purchasing.

Frequently Asked

What is the cable used for?

This is a screened audio signal cable for line-level connections in PA systems, recording studios, home cinema and commercial AV installations. The screening reduces interference pickup on longer cable runs between mixers, amplifiers, and signal processors.

What does the lap screen construction mean?

A lap screen wraps the screening conductor around the signal cores in an overlapping spiral rather than braiding it. This provides continuous electromagnetic shielding along the cable length while keeping the overall diameter smaller than a braided screen of equivalent coverage.

Can this be used for speaker cable?

No. The 0.05mm² cross-sectional area per core is designed for low-current line-level signals, not the higher currents required between amplifiers and speakers. Use dedicated speaker cable rated for the power output of your amplifier.

Is it suitable for outdoor installation?

The PVC sheath provides basic moisture resistance for dry indoor environments and protected outdoor runs under eaves or in conduit. For direct burial or continuous outdoor exposure, use cable with a UV-resistant outer jacket rated for external use.
