Description

The Mercury 2-core oval mains cable is a 0.75mm² cross-sectional area (CSA) flexible PVC cable built from two conductors of 24 strands each, rated for up to 6A current at 230V mains voltage. The oval profile measures 3.6 x 5.9mm across the outer sheath, making it narrower and flatter than round cable of equivalent CSA, which allows it to run more easily under carpets, along skirting boards, and through tight conduit bends.

Designed for light electrical wiring in domestic, commercial and event installations, the cable is used to connect table lamps, floor lamps, small appliances, and portable equipment to mains supply. The 2-core construction (live and neutral, no earth) suits double-insulated Class II appliances that do not require an earth connection. The black PVC sheath provides basic insulation and abrasion resistance for indoor use, and the flexible stranded conductors allow the cable to be coiled, routed around corners, and re-laid without kinking.

The cable carries BSI BS6500 and VDE certification, confirming it meets British and European safety standards for voltage rating, insulation resistance, and flame retardancy. The 100m reel allows installers to cut cable to length as needed for custom runs without purchasing excess or running short mid-installation. The reel ships as part of a 4-reel pack, though individual reels are sold separately at Niori.

Frequently Asked

What is the maximum load this cable can carry?

The cable is rated for a maximum of 6A at 230V mains voltage, which equates to approximately 1,380W. This suits table lamps, floor lamps, radios, fans, and similar low-draw appliances. It is not suitable for high-power equipment such as heaters, kettles, or power tools.

Does this cable include an earth conductor?

No. This is a 2-core cable (live and neutral only). It is designed for use with double-insulated Class II appliances that do not require an earth connection. If your appliance requires earthing, you need a 3-core cable.

Can this cable be used outdoors?

No. The PVC sheath is rated for indoor use only and does not carry weatherproofing or UV protection. For outdoor installations, use cable with an appropriate IP rating or armoured sheath.

Why is the cable oval rather than round?

The oval profile (3.6 x 5.9mm) makes the cable flatter and narrower than round cable of the same CSA. This allows it to run more easily under carpets, along skirting boards, and through tight bends without creating a visible bulge or requiring a wider conduit.
