Description

The Mercury 2 core oval mains cable is a 0.5mm² CSA flexible cable with twin 16/0.2mm stranded copper conductors inside a white PVC sheath. The oval cross-section measures 3.5 x 5.4mm, giving a lower-profile run than round cables of equivalent CSA. Rated to 3A maximum continuous current, the cable suits low-power lighting circuits, table lamps, small appliances and audio equipment in residential and light commercial installations.

Supplied on a 100m reel, the cable is certified to BSI BS6500 and VDE standards for mains voltage use up to 230V. The oval sheath allows the cable to sit flatter against skirting boards, behind furniture and along architraves compared to round twin-core cables, making it less visible in surface-run installations. The white PVC finish blends into painted walls and woodwork in most domestic interiors.

The flexible 16/0.2mm stranding in each core makes the cable easier to route through tight spaces and around corners than solid-core wire, while the PVC sheath provides basic insulation and mechanical protection. The 0.5mm² CSA is the minimum size typically used for low-power fixed wiring in the UK, balancing copper cost against voltage drop over cable runs up to 15-20m at 3A load.

Frequently Asked

What is this cable used for?

The 0.5mm² 2 core cable is used for low-power fixed wiring including table lamps, pendant lights under 3A load, doorbells, audio speaker runs and small appliances. It is not suitable for high-draw appliances or ring circuits.

What does the 3A rating mean?

The cable can carry a maximum continuous current of 3A at 230V without overheating. This equates to approximately 690W total load, suitable for a single 60W bulb circuit, a low-power LED strip or a small table lamp.

Can this cable be used outdoors?

No. The PVC sheath provides basic insulation for indoor use only. For outdoor or damp locations, use cable with a higher IP rating or additional protective conduit.

How is the oval shape an advantage?

The 3.5 x 5.4mm oval profile sits flatter against surfaces than round cable, making it less visible when surface-mounted along skirting boards, door frames or behind furniture. It does not provide any electrical advantage over round cable of the same CSA.
