Description

The Mercury 2 core lap screen cable is a 5mm diameter shielded audio cable built around two 0.20mm² tinned copper conductors (each comprising 7 strands of 0.19mm wire), a 62-strand tinned copper braided screen, cotton infill and a grey PVC outer sheath. Supplied on a 100m reel, the cable is designed for permanent audio installations where interference rejection and signal integrity matter.

Used for fixed PA systems, studio wiring, theatre sound, conference room audio and permanent AV installations, the lap screen construction provides 360° shielding against electromagnetic and radio frequency interference. The tinned copper conductors resist oxidation over time, maintaining low contact resistance at terminations. The cotton infill fills voids inside the cable to keep the braided screen and conductors stable during installation and prevent the screen collapsing onto the cores when the cable is bent or pulled.

The 5mm outer diameter allows the cable to run through standard conduit, trunking and floor ducting without excessive bulk. The grey PVC sheath provides abrasion resistance and a neutral appearance where the cable is surface-run in commercial or industrial environments. Each 100m reel reduces the number of joints needed in long cable runs, lowering installation time and potential points of failure.

Frequently Asked

What is lap screen cable used for?

Lap screen cable (also called lapped screen) carries low-level audio signals in professional PA, studio, conference and theatre installations. The braided screen shields the signal conductors from external interference, while the lap construction (screen wrapped around the cores with cotton infill) keeps the screen stable and prevents it collapsing onto the conductors during installation.

Can this cable be used for microphone connections?

Yes, provided the microphone signal is being run to a balanced input. The two conductors carry the balanced audio pair, and the braided screen connects to the equipment ground. Always terminate the screen at one end only (typically at the receiving equipment) to avoid ground loops.

What's the difference between lap screen and spiral screen cable?

Lap screen cable has a braided screen wrapped around the cores with a cotton or textile infill layer to keep the braid stable. Spiral screen cable uses a helical wrap of tinned copper wires instead of a braid. Lap screen provides better coverage and lower noise, making it the preferred choice for fixed installations where the cable is not moved once installed.

How should the cable be terminated?

Strip back the grey PVC sheath to expose the braided screen, fold the screen back over the sheath, then strip the individual conductors. Connect the two cores to the signal terminals and the braided screen to the ground terminal. Terminate the screen at one end only (usually the equipment end) unless the installation specification requires a screen earth at both ends.
