Description

The Mercury 2 core lap screen cable is a 0.20mm² signal cable with two tinned copper conductors (7 x 0.19mm strands per core), a braided copper screen, cotton infill and a 5mm black PVC outer sheath. Supplied on a 100m reel, the cable is designed for permanent audio installations where balanced signal paths and screening from RF and electromagnetic interference are required.

Used in fixed PA systems, AV installations, background music zones and distributed audio setups, the cable runs speaker-level or line-level signals from amplifiers to passive speakers, wall-panel volume controls, or zone distribution blocks. The braided screen (62 x 0.15mm copper strands) connects to earth at one end of the run to drain interference picked up along the cable length, maintaining signal clarity in electrically noisy environments like retail spaces, offices and hospitality venues.

The tinned copper conductors resist oxidation over time, ensuring stable contact resistance in terminal blocks and screw connectors during long-term installations. The 5mm outer diameter cable pulls through standard 20mm conduit and surface-mounted trunking without difficulty, and the PVC sheath resists abrasion during installation in ceiling voids, wall cavities and under raised floors. The black finish blends into most architectural backgrounds when surface-run or semi-concealed.

Frequently Asked

What is this cable used for?

The Mercury 2 core screened cable is primarily used for fixed PA and distributed audio installations. It carries balanced line-level or speaker-level signals from amplifiers to passive speakers, volume controls or zone distribution panels in commercial and residential AV systems.

How does the braided screen work?

The braided copper screen surrounds the two signal conductors and acts as a shield against RF and electromagnetic interference. The screen is connected to earth at one end of the cable run (typically at the amplifier end), which drains interference to ground and prevents it from modulating the audio signal.

What maximum run length is recommended?

For speaker-level signals at 8 ohms, the 0.20mm² cross-sectional area limits practical runs to around 10-15m before cable resistance begins to affect frequency response and damping factor. For line-level signals the cable can run substantially longer without signal degradation, limited mainly by capacitance and external interference rather than resistance.

Can this cable be used outdoors?

The PVC sheath is not UV-stabilised and will degrade under direct sunlight. For outdoor runs the cable should be installed inside conduit, trunking or ducting that protects it from UV exposure and moisture ingress.
